Spokeshaves, Drawknives, Froes
Lie-Nielsen Toolworks Australia has a range of spokeshaves, drawknives & froes that are very effective and a joy to use.
The Spokeshave:
The spokeshave is a shaping and smoothing tool. It can be used in various applications such as smoothing internal and external curves and rounding corners. It is often used to smooth the surface after cutting with chisels or saws and in woodworking jobs such as making cartwheel spokes, chair legs, paddles, bows, and arrows. The tool consists of a blade fixed into the tool's body, which has a handle for each hand.
The Drawknife:
A drawknife is commonly used to remove large slices of wood for flat faceted work, to debark trees, or to create roughly rounded or cylindrical billets for further work on a lathe, or it can shave like a spokeshave plane, where finer finishing is less of a concern than a rapid result.
The Froe :
A froe is used to advance and control a split in greenwood, in a process called riving. (It is not used to initiate the split in the material where the diameter is greater than 6" or larger and or longer billets, where splitting hatchet or wedge is used to initiate the split.
