Studio Work Stands (Course No. 4)

September 17th - 21st 2025

Total Cost $1228 per person

This is a 5-day workshop making a pair of (knock down) work stands from dense hardwood, with all joinery cut by hand.

All tools and pre-finished timber supplied.

Joints are:

  1. Bridle
  2. Through Mortice and Tenons
  3. Enclosed Bridle
  4. Wedged Tenons using Dovetail pins
  5. Drawbored dowels made on-site

For the two stands, you will need to cut 18 joints by hand, however, because we are using dense hardwood that needs to go together without glue, the joinery will need to be precise.

The stands can be disassembled by removing the dovetailed pins from the mid-rail tenons, knocking the top rail up and off, and flat stacking them for storage.

These heavy-duty work stands are based on a lightweight design by James Krenov.

These enhanced stands can be used not just as a place to stack materials you are prepping for a build, but to be able to cross-cut on, and as a robust table for finishing piece work.

The dovetail grooves (pre-cut)  in the top rails, where "Microjig" Clamps can be slid into each stand locking the piece to both for a stable cut when sawing.

If you wish to use the stands as a base for a finishing table, create the same dovetail grooves on the underside of the material you use for the table, these same clamps can then be used to secure and stabilize the tabletop creating a clear top surface to work on. (We will have a sample on site  to show how this would work)

The joinery used is designed to stabilize the stands completely, they will be rock solid for years.

We have made them quite high to allow for customization, suggesting 70 cm would be an ideal height for all the uses above.

Length 77 x Width 50 x Height 88 cm, pieces are made from 8 x 4 cm Tas Oak, each stand weighs 8.6 kg.

If you fly in, shipping can be arranged
